Book Overview

Affirmation is the sincere expression of appreciation for a person's remarkable qualities. We all have special gifts. Sadly, many blessings are overlooked and thus remain hidden. Through affirmation, we help people find their strengths and become all they were meant to be. The Art of Affirmation explains the importance of affirmation and how we are affected when we are deprived of it. Most importantly, this book teaches how to affirm. It leads the reader from basic concepts to advanced skills in the art of affirmation. Affirmation may be the most important gift we can ever give someone. Dr. Furey's encouraging, appealing message will resonate with readers, both as givers of this special gift, and, more significantly, receivers. +

Fundamental to healthy relationships.

The Art of Affirmation is a very subtle but powerful book. The field of "Positive Psychology" has made the discussion of people's strengths and the development of those strengths into living life at one's full potential a part of mainstream psychology. Dr. Furey's book is representative of this tradition. While not being Pollyanna about affirmation (it does not mean that people do not have faults and weaknesses), the book points the reader to a deep examination of themselves and our culture's tendency to not recognize and undervalue the place of affirmation in our lives. This book reflects a paradigm that is particularly present in the professional life coaching field. The View of Man that Dr. Furey represents is full of hope and the possibility of people helping each other be everything they can be. This book should be savored, while also keeping an eye out for the awareness it can raise for where your enculturation or family history blocks you from being a more affirming person. Dr. Furey invites examination of this without blame, guilt or accusation, which in itself is very affirming! So this book helps the reader examine where they are falling short in their mastery of the art of affirmation and offers specific ideas how to correct this. This topic would not be complete without discussion of receiving affirmation and Dr. Furey does not fail us in this area either. The inter-relationship between giving and receiving affirmation is described in a way that also inspires us to see where our inability to receive affirmation can be connected to giving affirmation. This book is particularly helpful to at least two groups of individuals. The first is for the lay person who wants to improve their life by improving their relationships with others by being a better person in the relationships in their life. In addition anyone in the helping professions and especially people in the areas of professional coaching or mentoring will find this book encouraging, enlightening, and helpful.
