This book is designed, to a major degree, to make up what is lacking in the "education" of the contemporary Catholic. This lack, and the premise of this book, is based upon the following position. To be Christian IS to be Catholic; to be Catholic IS to be an evangelist (or, if you prefer, a missionary). Therefore, every Catholic should learn how to become a missionary/evangelist. Then, every Catholic should put that learning into practice, so that it changes him and he becomes what he should be. This book is designed to start this process. An evangelist needs a number of things, but first and foremost, he needs to understand what it is which makes one an evangelist and then (and only then) acquire the skills. The attitude, the character, the basic foundational beliefs, the unspoken premises, these are the elements which make an evangelist (that is to say: a Catholic). The skills (and information) are secondary, and will come after this first stage is achieved. Allow me an analogy. You are on a team. This team is absolutely guaranteed to win. But your reward or punishment is decided upon your attitude and effort. The game is decided in advance. You cannot help the team win, and you cannot hurt it so that it will lose. But for you, the game is all there is, and all there ever will be. The game is life; the players are evangelists. The reward is heaven. I do not see how those who do not attempt to evangelize non-Catholics can hope to gain heaven. Evangelization is an act of charity, which is needed for salvation. Evangelization is ordered by Jesus, and compliance with this order is necessary for salvation. This most basic fact seems to be totally ignored by most Catholics. Do not ignore it.
