The Apostles: What Happened to the Twelve After the Crucifixion
The Gospels introduce the Twelve Apostles as the closest followers of Jesus, but their stories do not end with the Crucifixion. After the Resurrection, these men became central figures in the spread of the early Christian movement, yet much of what happened to them remains surrounded by tradition, uncertainty, and legend.
The Apostles: What Happened to the Twelve After the Crucifixion explores what can be reconstructed about the lives, journeys, teachings, and deaths of the apostles after the events described in the New Testament.
Beginning with the earliest Christian sources, this book examines the biblical evidence alongside early Church writings, historical traditions, apocryphal accounts, and later legends. It considers where each apostle may have traveled, the communities associated with their preaching, and the traditions surrounding their deaths.
Readers will discover the different traditions concerning Peter, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the Less, Jude, Simon the Zealot, and Matthias. The book also examines why some apostolic traditions are supported by stronger historical evidence than others.
Rather than presenting every tradition as established fact, this account distinguishes between what Scripture records, what early Christian writers claimed, what historians consider plausible, and what developed as later legend.
The result is a fascinating journey into the uncertain decades following the life of Jesus and the extraordinary transformation of a small group of disciples into the foundation of a worldwide religious movement.
For readers interested in biblical history, early Christianity, the New Testament, and the lives of the apostles, this book offers a thoughtful exploration of what may have happened after the Crucifixion.
