A solid introduction for young students to the Apache
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 21 years ago
You can tell that this First Reports volume on "The Apache" is trying to teach something when the cover photography is of a woven basket instead of a picture of Geronimo, the most famous Apache. Petra Press explains in simple terms how the Apaches were a group of nomadic hunters who originally lived in what is now Alaska and northwestern Canada but eventually moved to the Southwest United States. So right away we are learning things we never knew. One of the ways in which this volume is different from others looking at Native American peoples is that Press develops the cultural aspects of the Apache before detailing their history after the arrival of Europeans in 1540 with the arrival of Francisco de Coronado. The rest of the volume looks at how the Apaches were eventually brought to live on reservations and had their way of life altered. The First Reports on Native Americans series provides young readers with a solid introduction to the unique culture and history of (to date) eight peoples: the Apache, Blackfeet, Cherokee, Iroquois, Maya, Pueblo, Seminole, and Sioux. This book is richly illustrated with contemporary photographs and historic artwork, and also contains a glossary, Did You Know? and At a Glance sections, a list of important dates, Want to Know More? resources, and an index. There is a lot of information here that young students will find informative and useful. For example, given all the Native American peoples who are known by corrupted names used by white settlers, it is ironic that the name "Apache" may have come from a Zuni word for "enemy."
