Book Overview

The Angel of Parliament is a suspense-filled, futuristic, satirical, Christian political thriller, set in 2036. In a dystopian London, the spiritual battle between good and evil rages fiercely. Britain is in turmoil and the death penalty has been reintroduced for the first time since 1964. Who will be executed first?

Evie Atherton, a young, vibrant Home Secretary with blunt Northern charm and questionable fashion taste, struggles to survive in a corrupt minority Tory Government. She is an atheist, but she knows, in her heart, that the world around her is seriously twisted. As she begins to wonder if there is a God, medical advances and draconian new laws jeopardise the nature of humanity. People who protest, such as Bishop Aidan Breakspeare, are hounded from public life.

As Evie battles with isolation, fear, old jealousies and pain from a past relationship, she finds friendship with Aidan, his wife Miriam, and their extended family. Her life becomes dangerously linked with Prema, a midwife accused of murder, Oliver Bunton, the eccentric Speaker of the House of Commons and Erica, the brave newspaper editor. You will meet a myriad of colourful characters: the manipulative Prime Minister, Orchard Mayhew, sultry activist Lucinda, socially inept James, pregnant Tony, the vain but disillusioned Gregory, and the vicious Chawton Holland.

Their paths collide as politicians show their true colours. Deep friendships and interdependencies are forged, and love, courage, sacrifice and humour shine through the bleakest times. Those who turn to Christ will never be the same again.

As Evie emerges through the refiner's fire of trauma and heartbreak, who is the soldier with the flaming sword, and has she come to political power for such a time as this? This book is a prophetic, futuristic satire and a warning to readers who have ears to hear "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Ephesians 6 verse 12.

The Angel of Parliament is laced with comedy and sharp observations. Human beings are fearfully and wonderfully made, and as the spiritual war rages, people are still full of love, warmth and hilarious quirks

This dystopian story may strike a chord with anyone who has ever struggled with isolation, bereavement, juggled a disastrous love life, endured a back-stabbing workplace, or felt like an outcast. We see the hand of God who truly works all things together for good, and who never leaves nor forsakes those who trust in him, however gruelling their journey.
