Julie Andrews and James Garner star in a black comedy about honor, cowardice and unexpected heroism written by Paddy Chayefsky. Stationed in London during World War II, American Lieutenant Commander Charles E. Madison (Garner) has become an expert in avoiding hazardous duty. But he falls in love with an English widow (Andrews) who has lost her husband and most of her family to the war--and who selflessly believes in duty and country. And then Madison is chosen to be the first Allied soldier to land on the beach at Normandy on D-Day, an honor that no one expects him to survive.
During the build-up to D-Day in 1944, James Garner is Lieutenant Commander Charles E. Madison. He worked his way into a SAFE and cushy job as Admiral William Jessup’s dogrobber (procurement specialist), thus assuring himself of being “far away from” the coming invasion.
Unforeseen, his commanding officer has a mental breakdown and assigns him to FILM the first dead sailor on Omaha beach. Nothing would have happened if it were not for his gung-ho co-worker, James Coburn as Lieutenant Commander "Bus" C-u-m-m-i-n-g-s, who now wants to carry out the commander’s intent.
Parallel to this, James Garner convinces Julie Andrews as Emily Barham, that it is the memorialization of war that perpetuates war, and people who die in wars are not heroes. So, will Charlie (self-proclaimed coward) Americanize Emily, or will he turn British?
See James Coburn again with Dick Shawn in “What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? (1966).
