The American High School Business Playbook: A Practical Field Guide to Competitions, Summer Programs, and Real-World Ventures

This Isn't a Cheat Sheet for Winning.

It's the field map my teammates and I drew while chasing our own version of the American dream - built out of sweat, hard-won victories, and more failures than I'd like to admit, and written for every student out there who's reaching for something more.
I wanted it to be a key - to doors that too many students never even get to knock on, just because no one ever told them where they were.
If a single paragraph in here helps one student I'll never meet flip on the first light along their road into business, it's done its job.

What's inside:

Official rules for all five major competitions, broken down line by lineThe full 2026-2027 season calendar, hard deadlines includedEverything it takes to build a chapter from zeroHow elite summer programs actually decide who gets inBusiness plans, compliance, and pitches built to hold up under real scrutiny

Many students my age treat competitions, academics, and coursework as a war of attrition against themselves. I have never seen it that way. For me, every one of those steps has been part of the only road to the place I am trying to reach.

This is not a dry catalogue of tips for winning trophies. It is a campaign map - drawn by me and by the teammates I have competed alongside, out of the effort, the wins, and the repeated failures of a long expedition - for every student in this country who wants to be excellent and does not yet know where to begin.

There is a more specific reason I wrote it.

In California, and especially in a resource-dense region like Southern California, a high school student who wants FBLA preparation materials, an alumnus willing to serve as a mock judge, or an adviser who understands how CTE funding works can usually find all three in about three phone calls. But across the far larger part of this country - in the farm counties of the Midwest, in small-town Alabama, in the high schools of California's own Central Valley that do not offer a business pathway at all - a student who is just as capable and just as ambitious may have no one to ask even the first question: how do you charter an FBLA chapter?

The resource gap is the real unfairness in this competition.

That is why this book pushes two categories of detail further than most guides would bother to. The first is the exact registration procedure, fee structure, deadline, and advancement quota for every competition covered. The second is every administrative step required to charter and run a chapter from nothing. To a well-resourced school, these things may look like common knowledge that anyone could pick up. To a student in a resource desert, they are precisely the barrier that determines whether they ever reach the competition floor at all.

I hope this book can serve as a key - one that opens a door for more people, a door that was previously locked by nothing more than access.

The road ahead won't be easy. But every time someone breaks through a ceiling on nothing but conviction and follow-through, it's worth everything that got them there. Here's to the climb - I hope our paths cross somewhere along it.
