The Algorithmic Battlefield: AI, Cognitive Warfare and the War Hidden in Plain Sight

By Rahul Pandit

War no longer begins with the first shot. It can begin with an algorithm deciding what millions will see, a drone identifying a target, a synthetic video provoking public anger, or a foreign platform silently restricting access to vital technology. The Algorithmic Battlefield examines how artificial intelligence, cognitive warfare, autonomous systems, cyber operations, commercial satellites and privately controlled digital platforms are transforming conflict. Drawing on contemporary military and technological developments, Rahul Pandit reveals how modern adversaries seek not only to capture territory or destroy infrastructure, but also to manipulate perception, weaken social cohesion and influence national decision-making.Written from an Indian strategic perspective, the book explores the challenges posed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, China's expanding military and technological power, hostile information operations and India's dependence on global technology companies. It asks a vital question: can a nation remain truly sovereign when its data, communication networks and critical digital capabilities are controlled elsewhere?Clear, accessible and deeply relevant, this book presents a compelling case for indigenous capability, resilient institutions, credible communication and meaningful human control over machines. In the wars ahead, the decisive battlefield may be the human mind-and the final line of defence will remain human judgement.
