At a writers' awards ceremony an impromptu interview by Randal Poe exposes a reclusive national celebrity, although for Randal fame is diminished by love at first sight: poet Button Springfield hails from the same Appalachian crossroads where Delray Mabler has lived since his exit from the limelight. But in lusting after Button, Randal loses his notes and Mabler is found out.
