The Age of Anarchy: Climate Change Activism

No one escapes climate change. With the rising seas, what lengths will these millions of displaced persons go to save their countries? Corporations in the novel are basically soulless creatures at incorporation and take their sense of virtue from those controlling them. The ethical nature of any action can be dependent upon which perspective you take and its timeline. To simplify, do the ends justify the means? There are several examples that Machiavelli uses to illustrate his arguments and these examples are incorporated in an updated fashion to an energy consulting company. Machiavelli's own personal history and background are followed in an attempt to explain how and why he came up with his rather unique ideas. Those resisting the inevitable rising tide resort to anarchy. The novel starts with the protagonist's (Nick) mainly humanist upbringing. He attends school to obtain his MBA and debates the issue of corporate ethics and responsibility. Using Machiavelli maxims, he is promoted within the company. Nick uses less than moral means to terminate someone from a client company and to oust the chairman of the board. Over two-dozen Machiavelli maxims are laced throughout the novel foreshadowing Nick's method of handling the resulting crisis. The action switches to the research that Dr. Jennifer Lee is conducting on the Antarctic Ross Ice Sheet. The ice sheets have been calving off large ice floes for years, but now the entire sheet breaks free. Glaciers now flow directly into the ocean and levels begin to increase dramatically. Efal Waleden is driven by a need to save his own island nation. His motivation is similar to anyone that has been or could be driven from his or her own country. Efal Waleden is a marine scientist and a member of AOSIS, which comprises 42 island states. This society is the representative body to the UN and the Kyoto Protocol. These small island states will essentially be flooded by rising sea levels if global warming is not stopped. CIC hires Efal unaware of his civil disobedience motivation. He understand that the Kyoto Protocol will not by itself slow down global warming and the only way to do that would be to make the use of oil too expensive. This would entice research into alternative energy development far more quickly. Out of desperation, Efal uses his computer modeling capabilities to infiltrate the networks of pivotal systems. These systems include the release of damaging EIA documents, the disinformation within Indonesia causing rife with OPEC, and the tracking of major ice bergs in the southern hemisphere. An oil company loses its development permit and takes serious debilitating litigation against CIC, which cause internal strife and the desperate need to find further financing. Farmers are mistakenly arrested and fear execution by the Indonesian Army. The devastation in Indonesia causes unrest and eventually rioting. Forests are being burned down for farmland and the country is driven to exploit its resources even further to comply with IMF guidelines after the country had gone into bankruptcy. The tampering of the GPS tracking causes one of the worlds largest oil tankers to collide with a island sized ice floe. Indonesia's Strait of Malacca sees one half of the world's marine traffic flow through this tiny 2 mile strait. Threatened acts of violence start to shut down this narrow transportation corridor causing oil prices to sky rocket.
