When Dr. Sandra Preston first sees the tiny aliens inside the one-way glass outside the bio-room at area 51, her first thought is that she isn't ready and has trouble breathing. These little creatures are almost human, prehaps more human that she is. With large bald heads, piercing eyes and strange mannerism, they are more than fascinating, they might be an advanced species. It had cost her a lot to get there, leaving her job and signing away her rights on harsh security documents, but all that paled in the presence of these visitors and the chance to work with them. After apologizing to her husband for thinking that he was involved in a cult and being taught to use the protective suit by the CDC representative, she goes into the room and begins caring for them. Used to working with children at the San Diego Medical Center, she uses the same methods she used to give a small child a shot. This includes soft talking, and gentle touching. The head nurse quickly calls her a "Spook Whisperer" after she gains a level of confidence in working with the tiny beings. As the days pass, she becomes aware of a sinister plan to hold the tiny aliens until they reveal the secret to their spacecraft. Even though she was called in to solve their allergy problems, she senses that the tiny visitors are scared, emotionally vulnerable and angry about being locked up in a quarantine room. She soon bonds with the aliens as children she never had and they look to her as a mother figure. When it is time for them to be rescued by their mother ship, they invite the Prestons to return with them to Balacar. Besides returning in 30 years with miracles in medicine they learn why the aliens have come to watch Earth.
