The Adventures of a Dirt Tracker: Memories. Matches. Mateship. A Life Well Played.

The Adventures of a Dirt Tracker is the remarkable life story of Russ Tulloch, a man whose journey took him from being the undersized boy often chosen last to representing Australia as a Wallaby.

Growing up in Australian Rules mad Victoria, Russ was never the obvious sporting star. What he did have was determination, discipline and an extraordinary willingness to work. He trained relentlessly, pushed through setbacks and injuries, and eventually reached senior VFL level. When injury and opportunity changed the direction of his life, Russ travelled overseas and discovered Rugby Union almost by accident. What followed was an astonishing transition into a completely different football code.

Within a remarkably short period, Russ progressed from knowing almost nothing about Rugby Union to playing at an elite level. His performances eventually earned him selection for the historic Fifth Wallabies tour of the British Isles, France and Canada in 1966 and 1967. Russ became the third Victorian born player to represent the Wallabies and the first senior VFL player to compete at the elite level in both Australian Rules and Rugby Union. He played fifteen matches for Australia during the tour and spent part of his time among the reserves affectionately known within Wallaby tradition as the dirt trackers.

Life on tour was about far more than what happened on the rugby field. Russ takes readers inside an era when international Rugby Union was still amateur, players were expected to represent their country with pride and touring teams spent months living, travelling, training and socialising together. There are gruelling matches, injuries, selection disappointments, famous stadiums and celebrated victories, but also friendships, practical jokes, long nights, colourful characters and the kind of stories that can only come from months spent on the road with a sporting team.

Russ's story continues well beyond the Wallabies. His life includes marriage, fatherhood, business, leadership, international travel and a passion for sailing that led to some formidable ocean racing adventures. Whether facing a difficult sporting decision, building a career, taking on another physical challenge or navigating changes within his family, the same qualities continued to shape his life: persistence, curiosity, loyalty and the willingness to have another go.

At its heart, The Adventures of a Dirt Tracker is not a story about being the greatest player on the field. Russ began writing the memoir for his daughters and grandchildren, hoping to leave them a record of the life he had lived. As the story developed, he realised it was also a story for everyone who has ever been overlooked, underestimated, left on the bench or wondered whether they were good enough.

Russ writes with humour, honesty and affection about the teammates, coaches, friends and family members who influenced him along the way. His memories capture another era of Australian sport, but the lessons running through them remain timeless.

This is a story about memories, matches and mateship. It is about hard work, resilience, friendship, family and learning that success does not always belong to the superstar. Sometimes it belongs to the person who keeps training, keeps dreaming and, when life knocks them down, gets up and has another go.
