Insight into our history

To a Southerner who grew up during the time of this story, the story rings true. There is a strong and proud military tradition in the South which the Admiral's - a military hero - life story reflects. Then there is the revulsion against the mistreatment of black people which the Admiral's daughter Kristy's life story reflects. I know both sorts. The Admiral tries to reconcile his thinking with the new reality with some grand theory like Jews control the world and Kristy tries to reconcile her love for her father with her revulsion by trying to convert her father. I had the same relation to my father - I never gave up on the conversion attempt until he died. The author provides a nuanced description of the Admiral - he had courage in battle, he had black people with whom he enjoyed a human relationship. A well told story of an important time in our history which we only gradually are leaving behind.
