An Excellent and Comprehensive Reference Book

If you're looking for a smart fact-based reference manual that presents mainstream thinking and mainstream practices used in recovery from any substance disorder, then this is the book for you. Glasner-Edwards book stands out from the "recovery workbook" pack for a couple of really strong reasons. For one thing, she writes in an easy to understand, implementable way and this is a huge plus for the reader. Even more, whenever Glasner-Edwards makes a recommendation or a compelling point, she annotates the date and author(s) of the study she referenced to develop her position. The reader can easily find more detailed information in the Resource section at the back of the book. The book is organized into seven steps that include motivation, preparation/set-up, self-knowing, how to correct thinking, mindfulness, using rewards, and conquering emotions. Glasner-Edwards also includes a chapter about how to best prevent a relapse. Throughout the book Glasner-Edwards provides many worksheets and many opportunities for personalizing and journaling. All-in-all, she presents up-to-date, relevant content and it's certainly worth the purchase price. That said, there are a couple of reasons for rating this book 4-stars instead of 5. Firstly, Glasner-Edwards presents so many action steps and remedies, the average do-it-yourself person could easily be overwhelmed and might not even bother to start. This is why I suggest using the book as a reference manual where the reader selects the practices that resonate and disregards the rest. The second reason is because the book didn't set my heart on fire with "can do" energy and inspiration. This, of course, is a totally subjective opinion. I also thought the book could be improved by an overriding strategy that pulls it all together and by a simple daily action plan that makes it easy for the reader to get on track and stay there.
