The 5th Village speculates what the next evolution of Blue Diamond, Nevada will be. The area originally was inhabited by Native Americans. Blue Diamond has a spring and is an oasis in the middle of the dessert. There isn't much left of the Native Americans that lived there, but pottery and arrowheads. This is the 1st Village. The 2nd village was comprised of miners. This company town evolved into retired miners. The company town degraded leaving the citizens to upkeep the community facilities. The 4th village emerged when young professionals moved into the area. This influx of people revitalized the community. Now Blue Diamond sits again on the cusp of change. Increasingly affluent people are building large homes and it remains to be seen if they will join the community or hold themselves apart.

The author tells anecdotes about the village as it has been during his residence there, showing how the community works together much like a village. He covers various aspects of the regular life and how they play out in his community. There is hope and concern as to whether the new citizens will want to be a part of the community. Will the village atmosphere, that makes Blue Diamond special, continue in this next evolution?
