She cut off her finger. She should have cut deeper.

Sarita Bienvenu is fourteen years old when she and six friends sneak into the Kisatchie Forest. They find the dolls. Six of them take one. Sarita refuses.

But refusal is not protection.

The dolls mark the teenagers - their eyes, their voices, their dreams. One by one, the friends become hollow, their bodies puppeted by something ancient and patient. The seventh doll - the one with the garnet eyes - watches from the table, waiting for the door to open.
