When Pearl Harbor was bombed during WWII, Ray W. Buck was going to college to become an engineer. He decided not to wait for the draft and enlisted in the Air Force. After his training was complete, he was sent to England along with 500 other radiomen to comprise the 30th Station Complement Squadron. This squadron was sent as replacement personnel for the 94th Bombardment Group, one of the five groups that together formed the 4th Bombardment Wing of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. The 94th Bombardment Group took part in the US Strategic Daylight Bombing Campaign over Germany from 1943 until the end of the war when they were used to support the D-Day landings and the land campaign in Europe. By June of 1944, Buck flew twenty eight mission as part of this group and was one of only two men out of the 500 in his squadron to survive the war.
