The preface has already briefly indicated what the object of textual science is. This first chapter examines the positioning of textual science in relation to other disciplines and the more specific phenomena, problems and tasks of textual scientific research. In the later chapter's systematic attention will be paid to the various subfields of textual science. The term textual science is new in the Netherlands, but has been known abroad, especially in the Federal Republic of Germany, for some ten years as 'Textwissenschaft', 'science du texte' or 'discourse analysis'. Nevertheless, especially in language studies, we are familiar with concepts such as text analysis and text interpretation, although in those cases the attention is mainly focused on the concrete description of - especially literary - texts. Textual science has a more general and comprehensive character: on the one hand it has theoretical as well as descriptive and applied components, while on the other hand it relates to all kinds of texts and their contexts. Textual science also has to do with phenomena and problems that are also partly addressed in other sciences or courses of study, in the first place general linguistics and language proficiency (the latter as part of Dutch studies), then literary studies and the science of style and finally psychology and the social sciences, especially mass communication. In the social sciences in particular, there is a research method, namely content analysis, which would also fall under the scope of an interdisciplinary text study. The same applies to the so-called. Conversation and conversation analysis in psychiatry, psychotherapy, sociology (in the context of so-called 'ethnometology') and since a few years also in linguistics.
