The Civil War in Texas

"Elmer Kelton writes about the Civil War in Texas. A period of history we don't hear much or anything about when the Civil War is taught. But Texas played a rather important role in that struggle. Here the main character, Cloud, is trying to help restore peace in Comanche territory by acting as guide for The Mounted Texas Rifles of the Republic's Confederate Army led by Captain Bancroft who believes Cloud is a coward. Cloud soon realizes that in spite of his personal wish of not wanting to kill the Indians he learns how for some the mere sight of Comanche brutality drove some men to fight. Good enough Kelton book to be read. Not great

If you see Elmer Kelton as the author, he knows what he talking about, he's been there--done that. I am a loyal fan of this author, and love all his books.

Only Kelton gets five stars!

I very seldom give out five star ratings, but Elmer Kelton gets them. I love his book, Buffalo Wagons, but if there's one that's nearly as good it's Texas Rifles. He created a superbly heroic character in Sam Cloud, and if anyone thinks the western died with L'Amour, you are WRONG. Between Elmer Kelton and Kirby Jonas, the western is very much alive. I hope everyone gets a chance to read these two authors. If you like Texas Rifles, read Kirby Jonas's The Dansing Star or Death of an Eagle for a super treat. These two are the best!
