Useless. Do not buy.

I was hoping for a book that would teach me about how to identify edible plants in Texas, and how to prepare them. This book is not that. It identifies 20 total edible plants in Texas, using black and white pictures only, and extremely limited descriptions. Each plant gets about a one sentence description, one sentence for safety advice, and vague culinary use. For ex: for Indian paintbrush it says “identifying feature: cone-shaped collections of colored tubular blooms”, “safety advice: stay away from pesticide treated areas”, and “culinary use: infuse syrups with flowers or use them as a salad garnish.” The book also says there are recipes in the book. Yall. There are three. Three recipes in the book. It almost seems like a joke. In chapter two, titled “how to recognize edible plants,” the advice given is so vague that it is completely unhelpful. 1- look for distinctive leaves. 2- notice aromatic features. 3- observe development habitat. 4- flower characteristics. I feel like they could’ve written “to identify the plant, just look and make sure it’s the right plant.” Pretty useless information. Anyway I could go on but I’ll stop there. Basically, if you’re looking for a field guide or something to help identity and cook wild plants, spend your money elsewhere.
