For a preacher, the opportunity to hear (and in this case read), sermons from great preachers is one to be coveted. This volume, edited by Bill Turpie, is drawn from sermons and interviews featured in the Odyssey Network TV series, titled "Great Preachers." The ten preachers featured are Tony Campolo, Fred Craddock, James Forbes, Billy Graham, Thomas Long, Haddon Robison, John Stott, Barbara Brown Taylor, Gardner Taylor and William Willimon. I can think of a few others I might have included, but not at the expense of any who do appear. This is a book worth the money and time invested. Its strengths include fine examples of good, biblical preaching, conversations with pulpit masters detailing their approach to the preaching task, and enough variety in preaching styles to have a broad appeal. The book does have limitations, such as the fact that it is drawn from spoken words, and therefore is written more for the ear than for the eye. Additionally, a couple of the interviews are too brief to provide an adequate feel for that preacher's approach to his/her task. However, on the whole, it is a book that I would recommend.
