The masticatory system performs a wide range of functions including, swallowing, grinding of food, speaking, etc. Pain associated with inability to perform these functions is a characteristic feature of masticatory system disorder. The term "temporomandibular disorders" (TMDs) refers to a group of over 30 medical conditions that affect the muscles and tissues of the jaw as well as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
