Telling October examines the rich and accretive processes by which the new Soviet regime sought to construct the events of 1917 as a major revolutionary event, indeed a foundation event, for the new Communist state. As a "memory project," it sought to socialize generations of Soviet citizens into an understanding of "October" as just such a watershed event. Although by no means completely successful, these efforts still leave their traces today in modern Russia.
