excellent young or old

I first read this book when I was 13 and again ten years later. The first time I have to admite that I did not fully understand the circumstances of the characters but I loved the book none the less. I think, to say this book isn't for young adults is to conservative. This book deeply analyzes what it is like to be an outsider. Even though most young people are not facing problems as drastic as the characters; on an emothional level lots of young people are in the same place. The life lessons I learned from reading this book have proved invaluable to me over the years, especially when it comes to appreciating people who are physically different. It Just seems like a waste to wait untill you're an "adult" to read this great book. So if you're young or any age and appreciate GREAT literature, this book is for you.

Put this on your Disablity Literature Bibliography

This quirky story about three disabled people who decide to live together in a nice bungalow in the suburbs offers beautiful insight on the quest to be "normal." I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to explore what it means to be vastly different.Great for a Disability Literature class or for any literature class.

A Difficult Book

The emotional and sexual intricacies explored in this story would make this a difficult book for young readers to appreciate and I was somewhat shocked to find it listed in the "Children's" (young adult) category. But for those who are mature enough it is a rewarding, if heartbreaking, read.

Not for children!

This is an excellent book, but it is certainly not intended for a young audience. The main character is a young woman who is disfigured as the result of a vicious attack; while in the hospital, she is befriended by two men, both of whom have handicaps of their own. They decide to live together when all three are released from the hospital, and the story of how they try to make a home for themselves, and a family OF themselves, is very bittersweet. It is a moving novel in which the physical "damages" of the characters are minor compared to the psychological damages which they have sustained in life. An excellent, thought-provoking read, but not for anyone under 13, in my opinion.
