Evelyn Lassiter is a senior in high school, and she's sick of all the pressure and expectations. So she decides to teach her parents and her community a lesson. Running an underground campaign, she rallies her class -and the senior classes of other schools in Elviston County, Tennessee- and she gets herself elected sheriff. Multiple teenagers have overdosed. Her only ally in pinning down the source is a stoic, black deputy named Leo Paige. He lost his own bid for sheriff two years ago, with only fourteen votes, and is more than a little irritated by Evelyn's thoughtless brand of activism. But they must learn to understand each other to unravel the corruption of the past regime...
