Teen Privacy Rights-Knowledge is Power

With locker searches an increasingly common phenomenon, the right to privacy is an important and often misunderstood idea. This book leads readers through the evolution of the debate, whether teens have the same rights as adults, and exactly what those rights are. She explains the Supreme Court decisions that have lead to the current understanding of the right to privacy, how it applies to minors, and points out that law in our country is forever subject to review and change. Specific definitions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act are explained, and the final chapter develops the idea of safeguarding your privacy when using the internet. The author is very thorough, explaining the history of drugs and violence on school campuses, and presenting the difficulty in balancing safety and privacy. Footnotes provide more information about the court cases referred to. Also included are an index and a list of books and internet sites for further reading.
