Innocent vegetables do not stand a chance.

At first glance, this looks like it could be a coffee table book, with lots of nice glossy photos of tempting cuisine. However, on a second look, you will find that this is a practical book, well-organized and easy to prepare for projects or meals. I am an on-and-off-again vegetarian, not by conviction, but by choice. I find this book fascinating because it is not a diet book. There is no restriction on what you can or cannot eat and how much you do or do not eat. It is a cookbook. I also have to confess that I only have time to work with this book on weekends and find myself taking MREs to work. So, these dishes are a unique treat. However, when I try to take leftovers to work, they seem to disappear in the car as I cannot help myself. Back to the book, this is why you are reading this review: you will find that this is much deeper than just a recipe book. There is a section called Kitchen Essentials that explains the basics of foods and what they are used for. There is a metric conversion chart for those people who get stuck with metrics. We have a kitchen equipment and utensils section to describe the different tools or utensils used in the various projects or recipes; it is not quite Martha Stewart, but it will get you off the ground. And for those who know what they want to do. Just do not know where it is in the book; there is a good index. As with any book, there are 2 things you look for, besides recipes. The first is the copyright date to see if the recipes are dated with impossible-to-find ingredients or old-fashioned cooking instructions. Though I have a collection of ancient cookbooks, the newer ones will help you work better with newer tools, newer cooking devices, and newer displays. The second is finding out who authored the book; sometimes, you have to take your chances that they are fairly normal and not writing something exotic just to sell a book. In this case, we are lucky on both counts. The copyright is 2012. We know that this was written in this century, and Matthew Locricchio has authored several successful books on cooking for kids that won him “The Gourmand World Cookbook Award, Best Book for Children and Family.” Everyone will have a favorite recipe, so I will not bore you with mine, and I am sure that you can find one here.
