Technology Strategy Toolbox: 1.0: Essential technology strategy tools and methods for the modern-day practitioner, strategy professional, or industry observer (TSTB)
Why this Toolbox? This collection of the key technology strategy tools, models, and methods are the result of having taught a course of the same title 25 times at Georgetown's McDonough School of Business since 2006 and continuing through today. The selection of which models to include is based solely on what I have found useful in class and in my own experience as a product manager, strategist, and lead technologist at various enterprises and startups over the last 25 years. That said, the course originally began with a focus almost solely on Christensen's disruptive innovation theories and ideas. Over time, however, I found it useful to introduce some historical models (Winston) and Utterback's seminal insights into the patterns and dynamics of innovation were too useful to ignore. Other models like Gartner's Hype Cycle and the simple but powerful S-curves for adoption and performance are very helpful as well. Most recently, I have added the important insights from Eric Ries and Steve Blank with regard to Lean and the importance of MVPs and pivoting when executing on innovation.A word on the cases included: Like any good handbook on tools but particularly important for one in which specific context is everything, I had originally planned to include a set of example analysis cases from rapidly evolving industries like media, transportation, education, and software. I have done that but instead of using my own cases, I am greatly indebted to a set of outstanding students who each contributed what I think are simply terrific examples of the application of these tools and methods to provide not just descriptions of a firm's technology strategy but true insight. To those students, a huge thank you and to the readers, I'm sure you will enjoy these cases on Amazon Web Services, Adobe Cloud, ClassPass, Ecolab, Salesforce, SpaceX, Tesla, and newly-added Sephora!
