Quail is the collective term for numerous genera of medium-sized birds that belong to the Galliformes order. Old World quail belong to the Phasianidae family, while New World quail belong to the Odontophoridae family. The family Turnicidae of the order Charadriiformes includes buttonquail species, which are called for their superficial resemblance to quail. The king quail, an Old World quail, is frequently sold as a pet and is incorrectly referred to as a "button quail" in the pet trade. Many of the bigger species are farm-raised for table food or egg consumption, and they are hunted on game farms or in the wild, where they may be released to supplement the wild population or spread into areas outside their natural range.
