During the Portuguese-Dutch colonial rule of Jaffna in 1656, Alagavalli's tranquil life has been turned upside down when her husband, Mudaliyar Poothathamby, in his aim to elevate his influence and power among the Dutch rulers, invites Captain Andrado over to their house for lunch. Captain Andrado catches a sight of Alagavalli from behind a curtain and is immediately besotted.
