Big words in science almost always break into smaller "words" called morphemes (or roots, stems, bases, prefixes or suffixes). Once students learn the meanings of common morphemes, they find larger vocabulary words easier to read and understand. This book differs from others like it in several ways. First, it organizes lists of morphemes by topic to allow a science teacher to connect them to the current unit of study. Second, it defines example words in order to make them meaningful to students, to ensure that students can connect the meaning of a morpheme to the example(s) given. Each classroom-ready lesson/topic includes a list of ten or more morphemes, a multiple-choice quiz that requires students to apply their knowledge of morphemes to unfamiliar words, two or more homework (or classwork) activities to complete using only a dictionary (plus a brain), and answer keys. Ultimately, the goal of this publication is to increase students' (and possibly teachers') understandings of scientific terminology. An increased ability to decipher unfamiliar vocabulary words benefits any student, but especially those moving on to college or to work in the fields of science, medicine, engineering, and/or technology.
