Teaching Critical Quantitative Methods in Education

By Kamden K. Strunk, Wendy Castillo, Amanda Simpfenderfer

How can data instructors teach quantitative research methods that challenge systemic inequities?

Teaching Critical Quantitative Methods in Education provides a comprehensive, pedagogical framework for integrating critical theoretical perspectives directly into quantitative methodology courses. Editors Kamden K. Strunk, Wendy Castillo, and Amanda Simpfenderfer bridge the gap between critical theory and statistical analysis, equipping instructors with actionable lesson plans, classroom activities, and syllabus modules to foster inclusive, equity-driven data practices.

Moving beyond merely defining frameworks like Critical Race Theory, Queer Theory, Critical Studies of Disability, and Intersectionality, this volume provides concrete strategies that transform how graduate students collect, analyze, and interpret data. The text is organized into two pedagogical sections: Section I explores how critical lenses alter design choices--such as how Queer Theory influences data collection variables and statistical assumptions--while Section II delivers plug-and-play classroom activities and step-by-step instructions for teaching complex analytic approaches.

Higher education faculty can directly employ these models to help students identify and dismantle embedded biases in statistical modeling. Ideal for professors, graduate students, institutional researchers, and educational policy analysts, this book transforms quantitative research from a tool of status-quo compliance into a powerful mechanism for educational equity.
