I have been looking for good, practical, and applicable TESL/TEFL (Teaching English as a second or foreign language) books to help me as I segue into the world of teaching ESL to adults. I think this is a helpful resource, that combines what is necessary. If you want grammar (look elsewhere). This book's strength lies in its holistic approach, and understanding that each EL (English learner) learns English differently, at his or her own pace. Therefore, it appropriately includes a brief introduction to the challenges of teaching ESL. Some Highlights from the Book: * Communication across Cultures - Language Learning and Culture Learning; Individual Responses to Universal Situations; and Being an Effective Culture Guide * Finding Out about the Learners - Needs and Skills Assessment (great tools for every teacher) * Listening and Speaking - -Guidelines for Teaching Oral Skills -Introducing New Vocabulary (Total Physical Response, Vocabulary Drills, Reinforcing Vocabulary) -Grammar -Idioms -Conversation -The Sounds of English (Teaching Individual Sounds, Teaching English Patterns) * Reading and Writing -Principles of Teaching Reading and Writing -Language Experience -Pre-Reading Activities -Recognizing Words -Developing Fluent Oral Reading -Getting Started with Writing -Free Writing * Integrated Communication Activities -Information Grids -Information Gap -Other Integrated Communication Activities * Pulling It All Together: Lesson Planning * Appendixes What I like most about this resource is that it stresses the need for context based learning. Learners need their content to be relevant, and need to practice as much as possible.
