The idea for this book, Tattered and Lost: The Quiet Art of Reading, began during a dinner conversation about the future of reading. As more people decide to do their reading on tablets and smartphones, there is constant chatter that printed matter, such as books and magazines, are objects from the past. There's a constant drone that in the future all reading will be done on digital devices. I'd prefer to believe that those convinced printed materials will vanish are misguided, but what if they're right? What happens to the "art" of reading?I decided that a collection of vintage vernacular photographs of people reading books, magazines, and newspapers would be a worthy pursuit. Before being overwhelmed by a future of snapshots of people staring at nondescript tablets and smartphones, it would be nice to be reminded of the romance of reading a worn copy of a favorite book in a quiet and comfortable place. The beauty of the act of reading should be celebrated. That is what this book attempts to do.
