Taste the Red Clay

A delightful book! I enjoyed it because the author has the ability to draw you into his stories - you become a participant and you find it difficult to put the book down once you have started. I hope this is the first of many books from this new author.

Taste the Red Clay -- It's Tasty

There are numerous Southern novels out there which deal with real life problems, but few that are written from a male perspective with such sensitivity and humor. The hero (main character) of the book is middle aged Rocky McKay who has just lost his job and who is separated from his wife. Rocky moves alone into his childhood home which he is in the process of renovating. As Rocky contemplates what he sees as his failures, he looks back over his life for clues that brought him to his present state. The book moves back and forth from Rocky's growing-up years to the present. The author is skillful in taking Rocky through his early years. The youthful Rocky's escapades have such a ring of familiarity about them that they could well be anyone's struggles in the process of growing up. This writer is at his best, however, when he navigates the uneven terrain of male/female relationships with insight and humor. At one point Rocky concludes that the most frequesnly asked question by a female of a male is "What are you thinking?" Then he admits that his standard answer (and the only one that he can think of) is, "Nothing." Rocky is a survivor, and the reader cannot help but cheer him on. This book is well worth reading.
