Dahl is perhaps best known for his Children's books - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Enormous Crocodile, et al - but he truly shines when allowed to take the gloves off and swing at will. His view of the flawed but hopeful human spirit provides each story with a similar theme - fate rewards the deserving and punishes the flawed (except when the deserving get punished, and the reader is left to contemplate the injustice). And of course, his initial story "Taste" is my favorite wine tasting stories. Dahl craftily creates high tension between an insufferable wine snob and his social-climbing host, with the former getting his just desserts in the last paragraph (no, do NOT read it first!) Each story is short enough to read in those few minutes between hitting the sheets and turning off the lights. One of my favorites.
