Re-Readable Side Characters Get Their Chance

The book after! At least that is how my mind thought of Tangle of Need after the spectacular Kiss of Snow. And, the poor book with it's many series plot paths running through it including Hawke and Sienna's ongoing mating reinforced my early impression. As the next book in the Books of My Heart readalong and my re-read, I have to say that it felt like a tweeny to me between two mega books. Tangle of Need is the eleventh of the Psy-Changeling series and introduces the romance of two previous side characters, Riaz and Adria. Riaz is a dominant lone wolf who has returned to the den in the time of extreme danger from Pure Psy and Adria has returned home from a satellite den to be with family and help as well. Both have heart troubles in their recent past- Riaz found his mate and she's in love with another guy and Adria was with a guy who couldn't handle her being more dominant than her so they parted after he put her on an emotional trip. Thus, this pair were really fighting their attraction at first and had some baggage to unpack before settling in. In truth, I was less involved in the romance than the overall forward movement of the series arcs with the Psy war, the rise of the Human Alliance on the scene as well as the enigmatic new acquatic Black Sea Changeling group to be introduced. There was also a ton of time spent in a continuance of earlier romance pairs, for which my hungover heart after Kiss of Snow is grateful. Hawke and Sienna are settling in to a an official mating including fun ceremony as well as sharing the alpha leadership of the largest Changeling clan. This is a re-read so I am not as antsy as some to soon discover who the Ghost is or what he is seeking, but I do love going back like this and getting all these earlier builds to that and more time with the Arrows who are my favorite group in the series. Perhaps it wasn't fair to Riaz and Adria to be something of a shared side plot, but their story reminds me of all the lovely separate novella stories of side characters getting their romances (which you should totally not skip because they are great), but they just happened to be picked to have theirs told in the main novel. I didn't really have significant difference in opinion about Tangle of Need from my first time through. But, for a re-read, my biggest takeaway was that this book did the job of recovering from the showstopper that was Kiss of Snow and keeping me in a high frenzy for what comes next with Kaleb's book, Heart of Obsidian. This is a paranormal romance series that feels like urban fantasy so it will appeal to both crowds who should definitely read them in order.
