concise history of food

As a nutritionist, nurse, food lover, and history buff I cant think of anything more thorough and well written then this particular book. As a young college student, a history teacher recommended that I read Apicus (who wrote the first known cookbook) but could never find anything worthwhile. This book not only speaks of Apicus and Greek foods and menus, but also of the Egyptians, Phoenicians, Persians, Romans down to the Saxons, Normans, French, and Spanish. I learned about the foods brought over from the discoveries of the Expedition Era, the great feasts of the kings, and the culinary practices of early chefs and the high status that they held. Besides a thorough history, there is also lists of different foods, vegetables, and meats with the individual history of each. Who knew that tomatoes were considered devilish and that tobacco was thought to clear the lungs? and what about the different foods that were thought to cause poison and human flesh to mend bones? This is an incredible book that a food lover must pick up.
