Before Herne, before Pan, before Cernunnos, before any of the gods we know by name, another god with antlers walked the forests of the north on the delicate hooves of a deer. The trees, the birds, the beasts, the vines, the earth and the waters were his; they were a part of him, and he of them. Man and god and animal all at once, the lord of the wilds, he knew and cared for humans when they still knew themselves as wild creatures. He asked sacrifices and bestowed blessings, yet remained hidden, an enigma, a presence.
