Northern Ireland" or "Northern Ireland", "Ulster", the "six counties", the "province"... this small region of the world has been the scene of one of the most resistant and violent conflicts in Europe.
and the laboratory of conflict resolution theories worldwide. Its history has been built on the legacy of patriots and terrorists, of bombs and secret dialogues, of myths and historical agreements... Structural problems, political controversies, cultural heritage, paramilitary attacks, socioeconomic inequalities, identity clashes... All this has transformed the conflict from a British-Irish problem over the independence of the island
-which was finally divided in 1920-, towards a constitutional dilemma about whether the region belongs to the United Kingdom or its annexation to the Republic of Ireland, and an internal problem of coexistence between the Catholic and Protestant communities.
For this reason, these pages will try to clarify the history and evolution of this long-lived and studied conflict from its origins in the 17th century to the current situation of "peace". Two criteria will guide the following narrative: firstly, the absence of personal political and/or ideological preferences and assessments and, secondly, the willingness to express the points of view of all the parties involved.
