Here is a portrait of a vanished world, in which malevolent sorcerors, wonder-working saints, and solitary hermits coexist with battle-hardened warriors and scheming courtiers, lustful nuns and harem slaves. It is a world in which the reality of the senses can prove insubstantial,and oracles, dreams, and phantasms can determine destinies, but a world that nevertheless can teach us much about the quest for meaning in life.
