Over five decades ago, Don Moore discovered the "SW" button on a family radio and his life changed forever. Shortwave radio opened a window to the world as he tuned in radio stations from dozens of countries. But, from the start, his favorite DX targets were the small stations in Latin America. His fascination with the region inspired him to serve with the Peace Corps in Honduras, where he learned to live and travel in off-the-beaten-path locations. While in Honduras, he expanded his radio hobby to include visiting broadcasting stations, not just listening to them. In the years since then, he has traveled extensively in Latin America, visited over 150 Latin American radio stations, and become one of the DX hobby's leading experts on the region. In this volume, Don blends together accounts of his travels, visits to radio stations, and experiences as a DXer. The book starts with the story of the first-ever shortwave station in Latin America and how Don hunted down the original location nearly 50 years after it closed. Other journeys include visits to homemade radio stations in the Peruvian Andes, a CIA-sponsored political broadcaster, and a small Catholic radio station in a Guatemalan town besieged by its own army. Historical articles recount the stories of clandestine guerilla broadcasters of the 1950s and of a little-known "War of the Worlds" program in Ecuador that had far worse consequences than the better-known incident in the U.S. in 1938. Now retired, Don spends several months a year on the road, mostly in less-traveled locations. He continues to enjoy DXing and still drops in at radio stations now and then. He regularly submits features to the SWL Blog and is a contributor to the World Radio TV Handbook .
