The small skiffs electric motor cut silently through the thick Norfolk mist. They were following a tracked signal that the ranger had shot into a large reptilian predator that had been eating the swans. The police became involved when a tourist fisherman vanished. The young policeman steered the boat to the hand signals of the female park ranger. The mist lifted as they approached the rotten jetty. Standing looking at them and grinning was a downs syndrome teenager. They stopped and spoke softly, not out of respect for her disabilities but because in her arms she nursed, like a newborn baby, a large 12 bore shotgun.
