A Fun Adventure

John Derhak has come up with a unique and highly entertaining novel. The book is written as a series of letters to his brother, Rob, (who is the bass player for the real-life band, moe.). The premise being that John has bought a hotel in Maine with money provided by his rock star sibling & the book details the adventures of the many characters who reside at or visit that establishment. Often very funny, sometimes scary & always entertaining, each story brings the reader further into the magic that is the moe.Republic Hotel. It is a credit to the author's outstanding writing ability that one has to keep reminding oneself that this book, is, in fact - fiction. There are a multitude of short, intertwining stories that help familiarize you with each character from the town & the book then culminates with the extended story of One Eyed Red Beard, a tale of pirates, treasure, murder & greed (all the good stuff, in other words). It is not necessary to be familiar with moe. or their music to enjoy this book. There is a similarity to their music though, as characters introduced early in the book take on a much more significant role later on, just as moe. may start a song in the beginning of a show, abandon it as they jam into a different space & then return to it with a vengeance towards the end of the show. I would highly recommend this book for people who love adventure stories, scary stories & things that just make you laugh. And to top it all off, you will discover just who invented one of the most important & highly used gestures in the American culture.

Entertaining on all levels

If you find Twilight Zone-ish interconnected stories, that special humor that occurs in a small town full of characters, Stephen King-like scares, pirates, UFOs & jambands(?!?) an interesting combination, then please do yourself a favor a pick up this outstanding book by John Derhak. Set in a hotel in the middle of nowhere (The Lost Kingdom), the goings-on at the moe.Republic are beyond entertaining. A fictional work, interwoven with the real-life jamband, moe. (John's brother, moe. bassist Rob, backs the hotel with the vast amount of money he's earned touring the country with the best band in the land), this book provides one captivating tale after the next. You do not have to have any knowledge of moe. to thoroughly enjoy this book as it stands on its own as an engrossing work that will make you want to read it again immediately after completing it the first time. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a good adventure, a good scare, a good laugh or a combination of all three.

Its a story through letters, not a novel or traditional book

Great book. Easy reading, keeps you going from page to page. References and origins of all sorts of songs from moe. even if you have never heard of the band or the moe.Republik Hotel, its a great read, especially for the price

Makes you want more...

Tales it is - but these stories make you want to visit! I enjoyed the book immensely, and can't wait for another from this author. He really knows how to weave a good yarn, and includes all my favorite subjects - Maine, a cool car, good beer, funny old men, pirates, treasure, UFO's, the sea, and rambling old houses filled with family and good friends... a must read!
