This is a book about a pivotal period in a young man's life, as he navigates his own course through momentous world events. Ted Hamill (1916-2008) volunteered for service in the AIF in September 1939, at the start of World War 2. He spent five years overseas, four of them as a prisoner of war in Germany, before returning to Australia. His time as a prisoner strengthened a resolve to make a career in surveying and he found a way to begin his studies in Stalag 383. 'Taking a Bearing' records some of his memories of the war years and his subsequent career in the Queensland Main Roads Department as an engineering surveyor.
