You breathe in, you breathe out, and everything you know is gone. Sara Walker knows firsthand what it feels like to have your reality ripped away, scrambled, and shoved back at you in an undone puzzle where pieces are missing and nothing fits. She's lost so much and is struggling to live and to find the strength to forgive herself for being human. With the help of Lincoln, her husband's brother, Sara realizes it's not about finding who she used to be, but about accepting who she is now. You breathe in, you breathe out, and everything you know isn't gone, but reborn.
There are some really good elements of this book, and some really bad ones. Let's start with the good.
This book does a great job capturing the emotional aspect of losing a loved one. I will admit I cried many times as Sara attempted and failed to sort through her feelings. And, while I felt the story dragged a little at some points, I almost feel like that added to the impact. Because it does consume you. Every bit of you. I also appreciate the time skips, as they made the story feel more gradual, and not at all like the plot was being rushed. Really, everything about the writing style was great.
Now for the bad.
Here's the thing: falling in love with the dead husband's brother while trying to mourn him is a hardddddddd sell. And I will admit, I don't generally like these kinds of stories. But I was open to being convinced it was right for the characters. The thing is, it feels a lot like Lincoln (the brother) was just waiting for Cole to get out of the way, and as far as Sara is concerned I don't think she was in the right headspace to be dealing with that. She had not fully mourned. She was looking for something to ease the pain, and Lincoln was that thing... but you can't just use another person to heal. The book briefly acknowledges this with Sara going out of town for a few months to be by herself, but it was too little, too late.
Because this book was such a mixed bag I'm giving it two and a calf cows. It could be a lot better, but it could also be a lot worse.
