The tall ship Friends Good Will and the War of 1812 on the Great Lakes come to vivid life in this well-researched historical volume by James Spurr. Book 1 Great Lakes, Great Guns Historical Series,... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I am a sailor and a History Major. To have a Historical Novel draped around three of my favorite things (sailing, history and Michigan/Great Lakes geography) was very exciting. One review said that this was a niche book, written for only a few people. Maybe that is true ... but ... if you are a sailor, a history-buff or a Great Lakes aficionado, you will love this book. If, by chance, you are two or three of the above, you will really love this book. It is always amazing, to me, that war stories just keep coming. The human stories that unfold during a period of war are very rich and almost endless. I can not wait to start the next book in the series. We ordered it today.
Sworn For Mackinaw takes you right to the period

James Spurr's book takes the reader right into the 1805-1812 time period with its accurate wording, interesting phrasing, and period descriptions. Mr Spurr shows his deep interest and knowledge of history, sailing, and the Great Lakes, weaving a story, mostly factual, that is riveting from cover to cover. He might have included more and better maps, but I can find no other criticism of this work. I enjoyed the book immensely and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in history, sailing, the Great Lakes, or just a good story.
A great read

Set in Detroit and the Great Lakes just before the War of 1812, Spurr's story teems with life--transplanted Yankee merchants and seamen, British naval officers both dissolute and steady, smugglers, and a remarkable Indian woman. Bringing them all together is Friends Good Will, a graceful merchant sloop caught up in the war between Britain and the U.S. Sworn for Mackinaw is a great read, espcially for anyone interested in sailing and the history of early nineteenth century Michigan.
Brings the ship to life!!

I happen to crew on the replica Friends Good Will out of South Haven, Michigan. This book brings the history her crew knows so well to life in a new and vivid way. The characters are well developed, and the story exciting. There is no other person who knows as much about this ship and her history as Jim Spurr, and this novel demostrates that passion.
