Alana of Adachia is the daughter of a blacksmith in the Gadalian tribe. After decades of war, the Gadalians live in territories throughout the Itruschian Empire, ever since a truce allowed them to produce weapons and art for the region.
But when Alana turns fifteen, tensions flare again. The Empire decides to eradicate the Gadalians and sends soldiers to attack her village, killing most of the men and forcibly marrying the women.
Hidden deep in the forest, Alana and Kassius, her best friend, plot their revenge on the persecutors who have destroyed their village. Legend has it that the Sword of Ares, a magical weapon wielded by the god of War, will have the power to defeat the enemies of the Gadalians and unite all other tribes in their cause.
But where is the Sword of Ares now? Is it nothing but a myth, or is it a very real power that can come to their aid?
