Upon reading the title of this book, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard of Charles Hebert and was excited to read Swimming to Atlantis. It did not disappoint me at all. I think I cried when Andy Jordan wanted to cry, and laughed when things went great, something that does not happen for me often when reading. The twist at the end was also a total surprise. It's an amazing read, especially for people who do not read many mystery/crime novels, and for those who do it's a fresh take on the traditional murder mystery. It will shock you.

I read Swimming to Atlantis as a reading group choice, and am so glad I did. The book was magical. The story left room for the reader's imagination to decide how he or she felt about Christian Waterman, the main character Andy and their relationship. We who live in or have lived in New Orleans where the story is set know anything can happen. The book has great New Orleans feeling. I was even more impressed after meeting Charles Hebert in person--what a valuble addition to new, young authors. Can't wait for the movie.

This is a first novel by author Charles Hebert, but you will never know this as you read. It is one of those truly rare stories that you hate to see end, but you can't put down until the very last word. It holds something for every readers taste. It will weave you into it's spell of fantasy. greed and betrayal and end by allowing you to believe in your own convictions.
Loved it!

Short, easy, great summer read - especially having lived in New Orleans all my life and recognizing so many of the places and faces written about. I enjoyed the book so much that I bought extra copies to give as presents, and now everyone I know is talking about it. According to my father, the best way to read this book is to start it at the New Orleans airport and finish it while sitting on a hotel balcony overlooking some senic waterfront (Dad happened to be in Hawaii). He swears that, upon looking up after reading the last page, he saw someone standing in the middle of the bay and just knew that it was Christian Waterman. I, on the other hand, was quite happy just to snuggle up on the couch, enjoying a glass of iced tea and the cool hum of the air conditioner, and fall under the spell of Andy Jordan and his story. It seems that no matter what your usual genre, there is something to hold your interest in this novel. I highly recommend it, and look forward to a second book from this bright new author

In less talented hands, this book could have been a dismal failure. In the talented hands of Charles Hebert, the book, part fable; part myth; part murder mystery; part love story; part legal thriller; and part a story of salvation and redemption, is just terrific. The story revolves around New Orleans attorney Andrew Jordan, an up-and-coming lawyer who is also a pretty good guy. He meets a homeless man who has set up shop outside of his office building and his life begins to change. On the days he gives Christian Waterman (a.k.a. Flipper) a dollar or two, Andy has wonderful luck. When he doesn't see Christian, or doesn't give him any money, his days are dismal, or does it just seem that way. As he gets to know the homeless man, Christian tells him that he is really from the lost city of Atlantis, sent to spread the word that pollution is killing the oceans and the people of Atlantis. Once he has delivered the message, Christian says, he will leave and swim back to Atlantis. Andy gets forced into helping Christian and brings his housemates, girlfriend Bets and best friend Bip, into the action. Just when Andy, and the readers, believe in Christian, things happen which make us not so sure. And, just when we think we have it figured out, everything changes and we are in the midst of a murder trial, an execution, salvation and redemption. I don't want to give the plot away, it's too good and too much fun to find out as you read. I must admit I had my doubts about the bum from Atlantis and if you have a doubt or two, just keep reading. You will soon be totally involved and alternately believing and then not believing in Christian and in Andy. This is just a terrific novel that I can't recommend too highly. A great beginning for a talented new author.
