Excellent Publication for IFR Pilots!

This book provides the pilot with a chance to see how the person on the other side of the mic deals with communication issues. The best part of this publication is that it describes in detail ways a pilot can negotiate a change or modification to a flight. The proper words to request those changes are often difficult to know by the pilot without the help of this book. Tom Gilmore, MCFI

I wish they would publish this series again

This is one of maybe 10 books in this series, which I think is the best set of books I have ever read on practical Instrument Flying.. I often suggest that my students buy used copies of this series whenever they can.

Outstanding IFR Pilot Tricks of the Trade

This is a great book that explains (from the controllers point of view) what pilots can do to make the most of the IFR system. For example there are tips on using VFR GPS legally in an IFR environment. The controllers share many of the restrictions they must live with and how you can "translate" what they say into helpful shortcuts. It also includes information on filing composite flight plans to get through even the NEcorridor with a minimum of vectors to PA and points west. A great book, short sweet, and full of info.

Indispensible for the new or experienced instrument pilot

Sweet Talking the System is an excellent book on how the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system works, and how pilots can work within (and sometimes around) it to get the most effective air traffic services. I think the single best feature of this book is the juxtaposition of articles from both sides of the radar scope; you get both the controller's view and the pilot's view of many issues. The thing I found most interesting in this book was the tips on how to avoid preferred routes; it's not a great problem out here in the West, but based on the descriptions, I can imagine that working around them in the East Coast areas (especially around New York) could be very beneficial. Additionally, the chapter on radio communications has some excellent points, especially in the ever-continuing debate about using the AIM recommended phraseology over the air.
